Vandals struck Castalia’s Town Hall, two area businesses, and two Castalia homes Sunday night, apparently angered by the lack of fireworks during the Castalia Fourth of July celebration.
According to Mayor Ellene Leonard, the comments “We want fireworks!” were written amidst the obscenities scrawled on the pavement in the front of the Town Hall. The building was also egged.
Yep, it’s all the media’s fault.
Gee, every time you pick up one of these infernal newspaper things — or turn on the boob tube at the news hour — you’re likely to read another story about the North Carolina Highway Patrol and the shenanigans of another of its troopers or officers.
GOOD MORNING: News flash! Good news, in fact. Wilma Tharrington called late Wednesday to let me know that she’s back home following recent hip surgery and is getting along just fine.
Thought you’d like to know.
One more straw ... and the camel’s back is being severely bowed.
Not broken, yet, perhaps, but bowed and under enormous stress.
The “camel” in this case is, of course, the Franklin County economy which is under its greatest strain since the Great Depression of the 1930s.

I’m referring to the departure of Franklin County extension agent Ms. Crystal, because that’s the name she has answered to for the last 14 years.
FRANKLINTON - Frances Newton Bragg, 81, died July 7, 2010. She was born in Granville County, the daughter of the late Annie Mitch Munn Newton and Towns Boyd Newton. She was preceded in death by her husband Willie Henry Bragg, Jr.
She was a member of Franklinton Baptist church for many years.
ZEBULON - Jerry Wayne Mitchell, Sr., 68, of 501 Gay Road, died Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at his home. He was born in Franklin County, the son of the late Myrtle Jackson Mitchell and Durwood Lellon Mitchell.
WARRENTON - Lyle B. Tucker, 56, died Saturday, July 3, 2010.
FRANKLIN, VA. - Charles Gilbert Pearce, 70, died July 6, 2010 at Southampton Memorial Hospital.
GARNER - Steven Reid Singletary, 48, died Sunday, July 4, 2010.
YOUNGSVILLE - William E. Burton, Sr., 82, died July, 3, 2010.
Let us talk about freedom first since we have just celebrated 234 years of freedom of this nation. This is a wonderful freedom that we all take for granted at one time or another.
The 4th of July celebration and, for that matter, the celebrations of independence of many countries around the world, are indeed a blessing as they bring friends and families together, as well.
The state of North Carolina has once again awarded a five-star rating — the highest possible rating — to the Child Care Center at Vance-Granville Community College’s Franklin County Campus.
State evaluators recently conducted an examination of the center using the Early Childhood Environmental Rating Scale (ECERS).

LOUISBURG -- Host Louisburg’s route to the Dixie Youth Major League Baseball District Tournament Championship took a two-inning detour Tuesday.
But the All-Stars, after falling behind by eight runs to Bunn, quickly got back on the title road and sped away to a 14-8, crown-clinching victory at the Louisburg High School Softball Field.
LOUISBURG -- After opening their season with a swim victory over Broadlands, the Town and Country Stingrays tangled with a tough team from Winchester last Thursday.
Winchester was able to defeat the Stingrays by a 270-159 margin last Thursday evening at the TC Pool in Louisburg.
In the first match of the season, visiting Town and Country, coached by Jamie Cash, topped Broadlands 260-146.
YOUNGSVILLE -- Heading into this morning’s action, the Louisburg All-Stars were just one victory away from a championship at the annual Pony District 8-Under Softball Tournament at Luddy Park.
The All-Stars have cruised to a pair of conquests this week, topping Wendell (8-0 on Tuesday) and Zebulon (8-2 on Thursday) to move into today’s title round in the double-elimination format.
CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Shaylyn Poppe got the phone call this week that she had been waiting for.

JACKSON, TENN. -- Pitchers Steve Bray and Anthony Varvaro combined on an eight-hit shutout as the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx blanked the Carolina Mudcats 4-0 at Pringles Park on Wednesday night in a Class AA Southern League baseball showdown.
Bray (W, 5-6) worked into the eighth inning, leaving with the bases loaded and no outs with a four-run lead.
