RED OAK -- Louisburg and Northern Nash have both gotten off to slow starts to the 2022-23 girls basketball season -- so one club was destined to earn a feel-good victory when the squads met Monday in the Big East Conference opener.
And that team would be the homestanding Lady Knights, who pulled away after a tight opening quarter en route to registering a 61-36 triumph in league action at the NNHS Gymnasium.

BUNN -- Few sports are harder to repeat as league champions than in middle school football.
That's because the top teams in a particular conference are usually led by eighth-graders.
And once those kids move on to the high school level, that usually means a rebuilding job for the middle school programs.

RED OAK -- Just 48 hours after taking part in the state championship football game, the Northern Nash Fighting Knights were on the hardwood Monday, hosting the Louisburg Warriors in a key Big East Conference boys basketball showdown at the NNHS Gymnasium.
Flash back one season, and Louisburg opened its Big East stint with a home upset decision over the Fighting Knights.

RALEIGH -- Rarely does opportunity knock so quickly -- and so emphatically -- during a state title football contest as it did last Saturday night for the Northern Nash Fighting Knights.
The fired-up Knights scored on the third play of the game -- and then recovered a fumble deep in East Lincoln territory.

LOUISBURG, NC--Funeral services for Annie Perry Hobgood, age 91, who died on Tuesday, December 13, 2022, will be held on Saturday, December 17, at 11 a.m. from the Perry's Missionary Baptist Church in Louisburg with Pastor Randolph Alston officiating. Burial will follow in the Perry's Missionary Church Cemetery.

Durham, NC--Joe Hurley Murphy, 91 , of Durham passed away on December 11, 2022 . He was born on May 20, 1931 and raised in the Gold Sand community of Louisburg, the son of the late Tommy and Mamie Gupton Murphy. In addition to his parents, Hurley was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy Murphy; his brothers, Lewis Murphy and Hubert Murphy; and sisters, Lottie Jeans and Louise Twitty.

FRANKLINTON, NC--Hazel G. Williams, 87, of Franklinton passed away Wednesday, December 7, 2022. She was born June 9, 1935, in Franklin County, daughter of the late William and Nellie George. Her loving and dedicated husband, Willie H. Williams, also preceded her in death.

James Teo Anderson was one of 9 children born to Douglas and Nannie Pecoullia [nee Jones] Anderson. This December, more than most, is seeing a lot of changes at the local level -- and more are on the near horizon.
But perhaps none has been more shattering to me -- and to this newspaper and, by extension, to you -- than the loss of longtime Louisburg town clerk Carolyn Patterson.
It was December a year ago when Carolyn had a "spell" at the tail end of a town council meeting -- a medical event that launched a difficult, year-long medical odyssey that ended last Friday with her death.
