County's animal services board off to a stumbling start

LOUISBURG -- County commissioners ended the year moving forward with their animal services board but, on Monday night, they almost took a sidestep.
In June, the board agreed to recreate its animal services board -- answering a plea that animal advocates first made in January 2019.
The purpose of the board is to serve as a citizen advisory board for the department in order to promote and encourage responsible animal ownership through comprehensive strategic planning and other measures related to the department.

LOUISBURG -- The Committee of 100 wants to give Franklin County residents more places to work.
The State Department of Labor wants to help employers find the workforce they need.
On Dec. 1, representatives from both groups broke bread during the Committee of 100's annual business meeting -- where they recap their year's work and set a roadmap for their future.

Sheriff White takes his oath, calls on his staff for support

LOUISBURG -- Sheriff Kevin White took his oath of office this week, calling on his staff to support him in making Franklin County as safe as it can be.
"It's definitely an honor and a privilege to be elected by the citizenry of this county to this office," said White, moments after taking the oath of office from Chief District Court Judge John Davis. "What a prestigious thing."

CHRISTMAS PROGRAM

After an absence of three years, The Oakwood Waits will perform a Christmas program at Cherry Hill on Sunday, Dec. 11 beginning at 3 p.m. This annual event is presented by the Board of Directors of the Cherry Hill Historical Foundation as a gift to the community. There will be no admission charge, but donations will be accepted. The Oakwood Waits formed in 1984 as a group of friends who wanted to sing Christmas carols for their neighbors.

LOUISBURG -- Shelley Dickerson first took the oath of office to serve as clerk of superior court in December 2020, but Monday was the first time she was sworn in as the elected clerk.
Dickerson said it was her staff that got her through the past two years and it's her staff that will move them forward.

I wish I could remember the year, but I distinctly remember the first Christmas parade I covered in Franklin County.
I was lining up the perfect crowd reaction shot, perched on one knee waiting for a kid to strike the biggest smile one could imagine as a caravan of cars, bikes, floats and a various assortment of parade entrants moved along Main Street in Louisburg.

Franklin County leaders pledge their oaths of office

LOUISBURG -- Franklin County leaders and staff welcomed a new member to the county's governing board.
Newly elected Commissioner Roxanne Bragg took her oath office, along with incumbents Harry Foy and David Bunn, during a Monday afternoon ceremony prior to the board's Monday night meeting.

L'Burg Police probe break-ins

LOUISBURG -- Louisburg officers are investigating two break-ins reported at school garage facilities.
It's not clear if the two incidents are related, though.
First, Franklin County school system staff reported a break-in and theft at their garage facility on S. Main Street on Nov. 29.

Fatal wreck investigated

LOUISBURG -- The State Highway Patrol is investing a fatal wreck reported on Tuesday night.
According to unofficial reports, a vehicle was traveling along E. River Road around 9:30 p.m. when it ran off the road and overturned along the two-lane roadway.
The vehicle then struck a pole.

BUNN -- Sideplots will be plentiful when Bunn hosts the annual Bunn Holiday Basketball Tournament from December 27-29.
The event will feature both eight boys and four girls teams and will be staged at the Bunn Dome.
Championship contests are slated for December 29 at 6 p.m. (girls) and 7:30 p.m. (boys).

RED OAK -- For the fourth time in eight years, the Big East Conference will be represented by a team in the Class 3-A State Football Championship -- and this time the entrant will be the Northern Nash Fighting Knights.
Northern, which rolled to the Big East regular season crown, has won five consecutive playoff matchups, the latest of which came last Friday when the top-seeded Knights rallied with a last-minute touchdown to defeat Fayetteville 71st by a 23-22 margin in an East Regional Finals thriller in front of an overflow crowd at Death Valley on the NNHS campus.
