LOUISBURG - Tony Clifton Wynne, 50, died Wednesday, March 17, 2010, after a courageous battle with lung cancer.  Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Louisburg Baptist Church, with Dr. Reggie Rushing officiating.  Interment will follow in Lancaster Memorial Park.

Three charged with murder
Franklin County sheriff’s deputies arrested three men this week charged with killing a Kittrell-area man during a home invasion.
Sheriff Pat Green said  they are pursuing warrants on a fourth man and looking for four others who barreled into Anthony Perry’s home after midnight Tuesday, armed with two guns looking for drugs and money, killing the 30-year-old with a high-caliber gun.

On Thursday morning, the United Way of Franklin County recognized those who have made it possible for the agency to help more people than they hoped — exceeding their donation goal by more than $7,000.
The 2009-10 campaign generated $127,874, exceeding the goal of $120,000, and United Way staff and officials held a community celebration at Louisburg College’s Seby Jones Center for the Performing Arts.

Warrants issued for drive-by shooting
Franklinton Police issued warrants this week for a man they say is responsible for a drive-by shooting last weekend.
Investigators believe Rashawn Leon Arrington, 23, used the same gun to shoot up a Layton Street home last Saturday that was used in a suspected shootout last month.
Neither event caused injury, but it has rattled neighbors and heightened police concerns.

FRANKLINTON — Town officials awarded a contract Tuesday night that will help feed the town’s hunger for business — anchored by a Hardee’s restaurant.
Two weeks ago, town engineers and staff opened bids for a sewer project to serve the west side of U.S. 1, between Pocomoke Road and N.C. 56.

More legal woes for Patrick Davis
A Louisburg man who told a Superior Court judge last week that he wanted to get a high-priced attorney to beat an armed robbery case was arrested this week on drug charges.
Louisburg Police Officer Travis Lincoln arrested Patrick Xaiver Davis during a traffic stop that led to the recovery of more than 23 grams of marijuana inside a driver’s side door compartment.

Deputies investigate suspicious fire
Authorities responded to two fires this past week, one that appears suspicious and one that was accidental.
According to a report by Dep. Nathan Rinker, emergency crews responded just before midnight on March 15 to a fire at 135 Oak Forest Lane in the Franklinton area.

It would appear that there is a move afoot in the North Carolina General Assembly to take a look at opening up the state’s overly restrictive personnel ordinances to public scrutiny.

CHURCH BAN? I can’t say that a downtown business area is the best location for a church – any church — but dang it, the idea of banning a church anywhere just kind of goes against the grain as far as I’m concerned!

The Louisburg College Campus Safety and Police Department is pleased to announce the commissioning of Paul Opanasenko and Chase Slinkard as sworn campus police officers. Along with Chief Jeff Linney, Detective Steven Whitfield, and Officers Tony Drake and Anton Edwards, Opanasenko and Slinkard round out a full complement of sworn law enforcement officers for the campus.

KVA’s 5th and 6th graders took part in the national celebration of Pi day this week. Pi, Greek letter (∏), is the symbol for the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. Pi Day is celebrated every year by math enthusiasts around the world on March 14 ( Pi = 3.141592653). Under the direction of math teacher Candy Adkins, the students ate pies, sang songs and read stories and poems about the number Pi.

Franklin County Schools’ kindergarten registration continues through April
Annual registration for Franklin County Schools’ kindergarten continues through April at elementary schools in Franklin County.
In order to assure a child has a smooth transition into school, parents are asked to register during one of the dates.
The school in which you register your child does not have to be the school your child will attend. Children must be at least age 5 by Aug. 31 of 2010 to qualify for kindergarten.

Teen dies in wreck on West Castalia Road
An 18-year-old Rocky Mount man died after his vehicle crossed the center line and ran head-on into an oncoming vehicle.
According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, Markee Dontrell Strickland was traveling west on West Castalia Road, just outside of Nashville, around 5 p.m. on Thursday. Strickland was allegedly traveling at excessive speeds, a spokesperson with the Highway Patrol said, when  his vehicle crossed the center line and collided with another vehicle that was traveling east.
